On Wednesday, July 30, in celebration of Disability Pride Month, members and students joined AIA Phoenix Metro Women in Architecture and the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB) Committee for an insightful panel on Design for Accessibility: Beyond the Code and a tour of Ability360 Sports and Fitness Center.

This was an engaging discussion on designing for accessibility—the panelists expertise and personal stories shed light on the importance of creating inclusive, user-centered experiences that ensure everyone, regardless of ability, can access and benefit from the products and environments we design.

Moderated by Kelsey Ahumada, AIA, Managing Principal at Portica Architecture, attendees will hear from the following panelists: Maegan Blau, Founder & Interior Designer at Blue Copper Design; Clarisa del Castillo, AIA, Principal at Merge Architectural Group; Maurita Harris, AIA, Senior Architect at PHX Architecture; Gary Nelson, AIA, Architect at City of Phoenix; and Stephanie Shough, Designer at SmithGroup.

Ability360 Sports and Fitness Center provides health, fitness and recreation programs to military veterans, individuals with disabilities and their families, and also serves as a venue for local, national and international adaptive sporting events.
