Michael Kothke, AIA, is an award-winning architect, educator, and co-Principal of HK ASSOCIATES in Tucson. A collaboration with his partner, Kathy Hancox, AIA, the work of HK is regarded for its careful siting and timeless qualities that are attuned to the desert. HK believes in the power of design to enrich life.

Michael is also Professor of Practice in Architecture at the University of Arizona, CAPLA, where his teaching embraces the transformative potential of design. With a focus on design and creative processes, sustainability, and the integration of context, culture, and craft, Michael’s teaching encourages future architects to think critically and creatively about their place in shaping the built and natural environments.

Michael has been recognized with an AIA Young Architect Award, the national AIAS Educator Honor Award, the University of Arizona Creative Teaching Award, and AIA Arizona Educator of the Year. Additionally, Michael has been recognized as a Most Admired Educator by DesignIntelligence on two occasions.
