ASU Walton Center for Planetary Health Building and Carbon Capture Tour

Join the AIA Arizona Committee on the Environment (COTE) for an EARTH DAY celebration and negative carbon emissions tour at ASU Walton Center for Planetary Health on April 22, 2025.

Arizona State University’s Center for Negative Carbon Emissions (CNCE), with commercial partner, Carbon College, is testing a prototype technology that would remove CO2 from the air through the use of Mechanical Trees. The CO2 collected by the Mechanical Trees can be converted into a carbon neutral fuel or other useful chemicals, or disposed of to cancel out present or past emissions. Meet the researcher team and learn about this passive process and explore technologies that can inform our carbon neutral future.

Attendees can receive 1.0 HSW LU from AIA.

Registration is $10 for all AIA Members (Architect, Associate, Allied). Non-Members can attend for $20.

The Rob and Melani Walton Center for Planetary Health serves as a new gateway to the Tempe campus at the southwest corner of University Drive and Rural Road.

The new, approximately 281,000 gross-square-foot, high-performance research facility fosters an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge generation and leading-edge research, including innovative endeavors focusing on the sustainability of food, water and energy.

In addition to public outreach and exhibit spaces, the center houses the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory, the Global Institute of Sustainability and Innovation, the Rob and Melani Walton Sustainability Solutions Service, the College of Global Futures, the School of Sustainability, and the Institute of Human Origins. The building also includes classrooms and a conference center with a 389-seat presentation hall.

The building also has research labs for biological sciences, engineering, life sciences and sustainability. Dry lab space includes computing, cyber-security, engineering design and fabrication, and robotics.
