The Applied Research Building (ARB) is a cutting-edge facility focused on advancing research and fabrication for space-related applications. It features areas for payload integration, dynamic and cold space testing, a CubeSat laboratory, and advanced manufacturing technologies.
Located strategically at the intersection of a major campus pedestrian promenade and the engineering campus wall, the ARB offers easy access for researchers and staff, promoting collaboration among departments and enhancing the visibility of research activities. The building includes active lobby spaces, collaboration rooms, and open office environments, creating an inviting atmosphere with views of a thermal vacuum chamber used for simulating space conditions.
Cleanroom research spaces are built within a vibration-dampening superstructure, ensuring confidentiality and independent access for grant-related projects. The meticulous layout optimizes specimen delivery and testing processes, leading to the high-bay launch vehicle payload assembly area, ensuring efficiency in research activities.
The ground floor houses high-bay laboratories and heavy equipment with direct access to the yard, while cleanrooms are strategically positioned on upper levels to enhance acoustic and vibration performance. The second level features mechanical mezzanine space, mission operations, and collaborative areas to support research initiatives.
Architecturally, the ARB reflects the research conducted within its walls. Its design incorporates elements reminiscent of unfolding solar sails for shading and includes brick patterns inspired by computational modeling of radio frequencies and sensor data exchanged with orbiting satellites, creating a visual link to the ongoing research.
