Carlos Murrieta, AIA, was appointed in early July by Governor Hobbs’ Office of Boards and Commissions to be a public member of the Arizona Board of Technical Registration (BTR). Murrieta fills a previously vacant public-member position that has a term that spans from June 30, 2024, to June 30, 2027.
The Arizona BTR reviews applications for architects, engineers, geologists, land surveyors, landscape architects, home inspectors, and alarm agents and determines if the applicants are qualified for licensure or certification. The BTR also accepts complaints from the public, alleging violations of the standards of practice for these fields and creates policy statements for public guidance on health, safety, and welfare issues related to the practice of these professions.
A co-founder and principal of Merge Architectural Group in Phoenix, Murrieta was the 2024 president of the AIA Phoenix Metro chapter, and also previously served as president of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) Arizona.
“It is a privilege to serve the Arizona BTR, whose mission is to protect the public by ensuring that architects and many other licensed technical professionals throughout the state uphold the highest standards of competence, ethics, and responsibility,” Murrieta says. “I look forward to serving alongside my fellow BTR board members and contributing to the continued advancement of our professions in the communities we serve.”
In addition to public members and representatives from other professions, the composition of the Arizona Board of Technical Registration includes one architect, Michael Kolejka, AIA, who is the vice chair of the board. Kolejka is a partner and practice leader in the Phoenix office of the firm Grace Design Studios.
