The Block is a modular, scalable strategy for integrating Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) into the evolving urban fabric of Phoenix. It proposes a system rooted in sustainability, affordability, and flexibility—using a simple, locally produced compressed earth block to create adaptable housing that reflects the desert vernacular. Responding to updated city zoning that enables ADU construction, the project provides a dignified solution to housing affordability and urban infill, while celebrating local materials and craft.

Beyond individual homes, The Block envisions a neighborhood-wide transformation by activating the city’s underutilized alleys. These forgotten spaces are reimagined as shaded, walkable community corridors. By doing so, The Block fosters intergenerational living, increases housing diversity, and strengthens social cohesion, without displacing existing residents. This integration of housing, infrastructure, and public realm creates a replicable model of sustainable densification tailored to the Sonoran context.
