
Executive Director, AIA Arizona
John Czarnecki, Assoc. AIA, Hon. IIDA, has been the Executive Director of AIA Arizona, the statewide component of The American Institute of Architects, since 2021.
John was based in New York City for 18 years, during which time he was Editor in Chief of Contract Design magazine (2011-2018) and oversaw the brand’s highly regarded Interiors Awards, Healthcare Environment Awards, and the Best of NeoCon Awards. John was Senior Acquisitions Editor of architecture and design books at the publisher John Wiley & Sons (2003-2011), where he led Wiley's publishing partnership with AIA and edited and published books written for architects, interior designers, and urban planners. During his time as Associate Editor at Architectural Record (2000-2003), then the magazine of the AIA, he oversaw initial news coverage of the post-9/11 WTC site.
John holds both Master of Architecture and Master of Urban Planning degrees from the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee (UWM), and practiced urban design with the firm Urban Strategies in Toronto and architectural design with firms in Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin.
John was appointed by the National President of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to serve as the National Chairman of the AIA National Convention held in Chicago in June 2014. Appointed by the EVP/CEO of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) to be Deputy Director of that organization (2018-2020), he was also named an Honorary member of IIDA In 2013.
