Wendell Burnette Architects - Has been selected as one of the finalists in the Architectural Design Competition for Scholar Cottages for the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy at Fallingwater, the iconic house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The competition design is for six on-site cottages to expand educational programming at Fallingwater. Submissions from the finalists will be on exhibition this summer.

The competition pairs a group of interior designers, or in our case architectural interns, with a product manufacturer. AIA Arizona was paired with our Affiliate member, Sherwin Williams, and honored the Southwest Landscape with a dress made out of zero VOC paint, cheese cloth, paint chips, brads and chains. The most effective experience for me as it relates to the politics of architecture was spending a day on Capitol Hill.  It was a chance to see our representatives in action. Our team armed with position papers visited the offices of six representatives. I will admit that I started the day with a bit of jaded attitude only to discover that we were consistently met with well  prepared, energetic staffers that seemed like they were looking out for the best interest of Arizona regardless of party affiliation.  That was D.C.  2009. For those whom I have yet to meet, my name is Kevin T. Morrow, AIA and I am the 2010 incoming President for AIA Arizona. I am the Principal of the Phoenix and Tucson offices of Gromatzky Dupree & Associates Southwest.

I have been training for this opportunity over the past four years under the tutelage of Ken Lufkin, AIA, Steve Lichtenberger, AIA, James Trahan, AIA and, most recently, Mark Patterson, AIA, gentlemen that have provided great leadership for our organization – leadership that I will strive to emulate.

I believe that collectively we were happy to see 2009 pass and we all recognize that our business climate did not improve with the change of the calendar. James Abell, FAIA - The National AIA Board of Directors elected James Logan Abell, FAIA, as the 2010 recipient of the Edward C. Kemper Award. Named in honor of the AIA’s first executive director, the award recognizes individuals who contribute significantly to the profession of architecture through service to the Institute. Abell will be honored at the 2010 AIA National Convention in Miami. Click here to view the full press release.

CANstruction - call for entries!

My year as President of AIA Arizona has exceeded every preconception I had about the demands and opportunities to be encountered.  Due to the our dedicated staff, my time commitment was easy to manage – thank you Alex, Charnissa, Diana, Cathy, Brent and Tina for your support!

What I did not expect was the demonstrated passion that so many of you are willing to harness as volunteers throughout our organization.  We have heard weekly from our members about the challenges this year has brought because of the economic conditions, yet contrary to what I expected, this created greater volunteerism and participation in the organization

The Board of Directors were my partners in creating a climate of listening to members and then finding appropriate responses to the local industry trends and political impacts of our state that seem to change month-by-month.  I give my thanks to this committed group of advisors and leaders for their opinions and guidance.

Most importantly, I had an amazing opportunity to meet so many fellow architects and develop new friendships that will influence me throughout the rest of my career.  Thank you for allowing me to serve in this role for what seems, in retrospect, just a brief moment.

Douglas Fredrikson Architects - Won First Place for the Ritz Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain in the category of Private Club, as well as First Place for Moon Valley CC in the Remodel/Renovation category for Golf Inc. Clubhouse of the year competition. In addition, Indian Wells Golf Resort won California Construction Best Recreation/ Sports Facility for 2009.
