This conference will provide the highest amount of Continuing Education Units for Architect members in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Wyoming, Utah, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Hong Kong and Japan in just 3 days, and will also provide enriching networking and educational opportunities for associates, interns, students, and allied organizations. Earn a spot  to present  at this year’s AIA Arizona State Conference titled “Impact Your World!”

How: Submit 20 digital images that demonstrate how you as an architect or how a collection of unique architecture has had a positive or profound impact on your world. [Images to be in JPEG format in a Power Point presentation, not to exceed 15 MB]

Why: AIA is seeking to promote a varied selection of examples of how architects and architecture directly affect the world around us.

Who: 10  to 12 submissions will be shortlisted and then applicants will be required to give a 10 minute presentation to the Jury. Five  to six finalists  will be selected by the Jury to present  their presentation during the one-hour Conference Slide Slam time slot. This competition is open to AIA members, Associate Members and Affiliate Members.

When: Statement of intent to participate is due Friday, June 17, 2011 by 1:00pm MST via email to Tina@aia-arizona.org. Entry deadline is Tuesday, June 28, 2011 5:00PM MST (via CD or DVD delivered to 30 N. 3rd Avenue, Ste. 200, Phoenix, AZ 85003 or email). The State Conference presentations will be from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on August 18, 2011.

Where: Sheraton, Wild Horse Pass

Last week was the National AIA Convention in New Orleans. What a week! It was great to see many of you there and I know that I didn’t see everyone from Arizona, but we had a great turnout.

One of the highlights was attending the investiture ceremony on Friday and watching Doug Sydnor, FAIA, receive his Fellowship. Photos are available on our Facebook page.

The AIA State Conference lineup is set – get ready to IMPACT your world!

I’m pleased to announce that we have an outstanding list of speakers for our AIA State Conference including Bruce Danziger (Arup Engineering) speaking on Innovative Structural Design Technologies, Christian Navar & Derek Leavitt (Modative) on Small Business Success Skills, Darren Petrucci, AIA (Director, The Design School, Arizona State University) on Design Education, John Cary, AIA (President/CEO, Next American City) on Social Impact & Social Sustainability and our keynote speaker is Julie Snow, FAIA, (Julie Snow Architects), and award winner from Minneapolis. Thank you to Patrick Panetta, AIA, AIA Arizona President Elect and State Conference Chairman, for all of your hard work!

At this year’s conference, we’re looking for AIA architects to volunteer to mentor an AIA Associate for the day of the conference. If you are planning to attend the State Conference and would be willing to volunteer to mentor an AIA Associate, please contact the AIA Arizona office. I suspect the experience could be as rewarding for the mentor as well as the mentee.

Michael Goodwin, FAIA – AIA Fellow, Michael Goodwin, passed away on May 4, 2011. Click here to read about his contribution to AIA, Arizona and the architecture profession.

Julian H. Clark – passed away on April 29, 2011. Julian worked as an architectural illustrator for more than 52 years, first in Atlanta, then in Phoenix. Services will be Saturday, May 14, at 3:00 at Central Methodist Church, 5510 N. Central, Phoenix, AZ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wellness Community, www.twccaz.org. He will be missed!

Next week, many of us will be in New Orleans for the AIA National Convention. Doug Sydnor, FAIA will receive his Fellowship at the Investiture on Friday afternoon. There are many great tours and lectures available. The ASU Reception will be Thursday evening. U of A has decided not to have a reception this year. Hopefully, I will see many of you next week.
Also, it is time again for the Western Mountain Region Awards program, in addition to the AIA Arizona program. Entry forms and fees are due May 20th for AIA Arizona and mid-July for the WMR. Plan to submit your projects.

Fred E. Zrmack, Sr. AIA Emeritus – We are sad to share that AIA Arizona Emeritus member, Fred Zrmack, Sr., passed away on April 20th at the age of 89. He was President and co-founder of the architecture firm, Daniel and Zrmack Associates, Inc. of Ann Arbor, Michigan and a founding member of the Huron Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Architecture High School Summer Camp – PHX Architecture in conjunction with AIA Arizona, Taliesin and USGBC Arizona, is hosting their 3rd Annual architecture summer camp (June 6-June 10, 9am – 2pm) for high school kids interested in pursuing architecture. Arcosanti Event – On Thursday, May 19th at 4:00pm, Paolo Soleri of Arcosanti will be giving us a once in a lifetime talk about his body of work. The talk will be given at Arcosanti. After the talk we will have a delicious meal cooked by Arcosanti staff. For non-AIA members the cost of the meal is  $15. We will meet at 4pm in the visitor center, presentation at 4:30pm. AIA Rebuilding Together!

On Saturday, April 3rd there were 17 members of AIA Phoenix Metro Chapter who volunteered for local community service agency Rebuilding Together to do a service project for an elderly gentleman’s home in West Phoenix (click to see a photo). Led by Diana Smith, AIA Arizona Director of Chapters, the team painted the kitchen and the entire exterior of the home; installed new front door weatherstripping and a new living room ceiling fan. Volunteers from A.R. Mays Construction installed a new bathroom vanity and kitchen countertop.

This is the third year that the AIA Phoenix Metro and Rebuilding Together have worked side by side, and I want to thank all the folks that gave up their Saturday morning to help with this effort.  It was great getting to know some of you, and a pleasure working shoulder-to-shoulder with others who previously I have only known professionally. Personally, I think it’s important for all of us to volunteer in our community, giving back to the city that has been a great place to work for us.

If you weren’t able to be there, or if painting houses isn’t your thing, there are other opportunities to serve with the AIA in the community. Larry Enyart, FAIA, is heading up the effort to recruit architects to be trained to assist in the event of a natural disaster, and I would encourage you to contact the AIA office if you are interested in volunteering, or just get more information.

Sustainability Training Program Information Session – The City of Phoenix Community and Economic Development Department/Workforce Connection Division is partnering with AIA Phoenix Metro to offer scholarships for AIA
members to attend sustainability training with the Sustainability Building Adivsor Institute and Maricopa Community Colleges. These scholarships will be paid for with federal State Energy Sector Parnership (SESP) and training grants.
