SMOCAScottsdale Museum of Contemporary ArtThe national Flip a Strip architectural competition-SMoCA’s innovative project challenging architects to dream up ways  to adapt, re-vamp and/or renovate small-scale postwar strip shopping plazas that line the streets of this metropolitan area (and virtually every suburban zone in the country)- is only one month away from deadline. Interested participants still have until March 31, 2008 to enter. Competition finalists will also have an opportunity to have their ideas featured in the pursuant fall Flip a Strip exhibition at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. ”

AZ OneA Reality Check AZ One, a Reality Check for Central Arizona, is a one-day exercise that will bring together more than 300 diverse people to discuss, analyze and develop alternative growth scenarios for this rapidly growing region. Participants will work in groups to envision where and how the next 6 million people expected to move here will live and work. The group will allocate expected growth patterns using Legos® in a hands on approach that will visually depict challenges and opportunities facing the Central Arizona region which includes all of Maricopa County and the northern portion of Pinal County.

> Better understand applicable codes, including new strength design codes (IBC & MSJC)
> Design masonry walls for in-plane and out-of-plane loading
> Explore loading combinations and design for the most critical cases
> Gain first-hand experience in the use of Masonry Design Computer Software

*Computers will be furnished for participants to work the problems using the software during the workshop.

EDUCATION 

MONICA BERTOLINO
Lakes ExteriorNext in ASU SALA Lecture Series Monica Bertolino is an architect from the National University of Córdoba (unc), Argentina. She has established a professional practice with partner Carlos Barrado in the studio Bertolino-Barrado. She is Professor of Architecture in the UNC and the Catholic University of Córdoba. Some of her most renowned works are the Farm Pavilions, the Public Space Recovery Program and The Botanical Garden for the City of Córdoba, and other public spaces in Las Varillas. She has lectured and exhibited her work in Brazil, Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Italy, among others. Won the Vitruvius Prize of Architecture in Buenos Aires in 2000, had an honorable mention at the International Biennal Quito 2002.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!  
Lakes Exterior2008 Class of Fellows AIA National elevated 116 architects to its prestigious College of Fellows, an honor awarded to members who have made contributions of national significance to the profession. AIA Arizona’s very own John F. Kane, FAIA LEED AP and Wellington Reiter, FAIA made the cut! CONGRATULATIONS!!!

 

Out of a membership of more than 81,000, there are fewer than 2,600 AIA members distinguished with the honor of fellowship. It is conferred on architects with at least 10 years of membership in the AIA who have made significant contributions in the following areas: the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession; the standards of architectural education, training, and practice; the building industry through leadership in the AIA and other related professional organizations; advancement of living standards of people through an improved environment; and to society through significant public service.
