NCARB’S LATEST MONOGRAPH
Lakes ExteriorSustainable Design IIWashington, DC-The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) has just published a monograph on the field’s hottest topic: building green. Sustainable Design II examines important new developments, tools, and techniques in sustainable design that have occurred since the publication of NCARB’s Sustainable Design in 2001.

Increasing concern about global climate change has raised public awareness about sustainable design and now requires architects to address these critical issues.  Sustainable Design II takes an in-depth look at the
emergence of green building rating systems, most notably the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification. It also examines the costs and benefits of green buildings and
integrated design strategies.

Successful completion of the Sustainable Design II quiz earns 12 professional development units (PDUs) and/or
AIA learning units in health, safety, and welfare. The monograph’s price includes the monograph, the web-based quiz, the score reporting process, and one free retest if needed. Online, fax, or mail orders are accepted for all NCARB monographs. Order online or visit the publication section of NCARB’s web site at http://www.ncarb.org/publications/index.html to see other available titles.

PRESIDENT BUSH SIGNS LANDMARK ENERGY BILL
RKandEnergBillAIA Members Champion Sustainable DesignPresident Bush signed into law historic energy legislation that will shape U.S. energy policy for decades to come. The law seeks to dramatically reduce U.S. energy consumption over the next 25 years by applying the AIA’s 2030 carbon-reducing targets to federal buildings, increasing fuel efficiency standards for automobiles, and establishing new energy efficiency standards for appliances. The new law includes numerous provisions advocated by the AIA to promote sustainable design in the built environment. Christine W. McEntee, the AIA’s executive vice president and chief executive officer, praised the efforts of policymakers as she attended today’s bill-signing ceremony at the Department of Energy’s Washington, D.C., headquarters.“In crafting this law, Congress and the president have recognized what architects have long known: that improving the energy efficiency of our buildings will do more to promote energy independence and reduce our nation’s reliance on fossil fuels,” McEntee said.

Bill includes 2030 targets for federal buildings
Nearly two years after the AIA Board of Directors approved a policy position setting incremental energy reduction targets for all buildings, Congress included these goals for federal buildings in the bill the president signed today. Under the new law, all new and significantly renovated federal buildings are required to be carbon-neutral by 2030, dramatically reducing the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by the built environment.

LILIA! A PLAY ABOUT AUSTRIA’S FIRST WOMAN ARCHITECT
lilia!Theater and Architecture Make a Beautiful Match!Lilia! the play is a one-woman show about this fascinating woman, written and performed by her granddaughter, Libby. The show tells Lilia’s life story and gives insight into the relationship between the grandmother and granddaughter as the granddaughter followed her own acting dreams.SUNDAY, JANUARY 20th at 2:00PM @ DESERT FOOTHILLS THEATERLilia Skala was Austria’s first woman architect.  Her portfolio was donated by her children to the International Archive of Women in Architecture in the fall of 2003. Images of some of her drawings and an article in the AWIA newsletter can be found on the website regarding the production. If you go to http://www.liliatheplay.com and click on “bios”, then Lilia Skala, you will see a link at the top of her bios to both the article and some of her drawings.

Lilia loved theater, but her sons conjecture that she studied architecture because she was fascinated by the beauty in architecture and it was a more “serious” study so her parents were approving.  University of Vienna did not take women at the time (1930s) so she got her degree in Dresden.

When the Nazis invaded Austria during the war, she was, at that point married. Her husband was Jewish and was captured by the Nazis. She helped him escape by bribing the guards.  He fled Austria immediately and she followed later with their two sons.  She settled in New York and began to follow her other love, acting.  She eventually became a celebrated actress of film, stage and television–winning an Academy AwardTM - nomination for her role as the Mother Superior in Lilies of the Field with Sidney Portier (which was, coincidentally, filmed in Arizona).

PREPARE FOR SLOW TIMES - FIRM AND FAMILY
CoinsArticle by Penny H. Posedly, FAIA Prepare for Slow Times - Firm and FamilyAlthough many firms are busy, the newspaper warns us that slow times are ahead. If you work in housing, you feel it already. How can you lessen the effect on your firm and your family? Pay off the credit cards.  Why? If you don’t have much work, you won’t want to be paying the income you benefit to your firm or your family.  Move your credit debt to a lower interest - often introductory offer - account, then pay it off as fast as you can.

·But don’t close them: In prolonged slow times, many families and firms have “lived on their credit cards”.  You will want them unused but available.

Pay cash.  When you don’t have enough cash on you, use your debit card.

Keep the cash-flow coming.  Don’t wait 1.5 months to discover that your clients are late paying your invoice.  Don’t let your invoices get 60 or 90 days out.  People don’t like dealing with people they owe money to.  It makes them feel guilty. Read on…
