WELCOME to another edition of “JUST THE FACTS, PLEASE…” September has been a busy month so far. We had our State Conference, Design Awards Gala and launched our new website. Whew! Thank you to everyone that participated in the events and congratulations to the winners! You may or may not have visited our new site…If you haven’t please check it out: www.aia-arizona.org. If you have, you may have noticed some kinks. We’re still adjusting to the new site. We haven’t got all of our events posted in the calendar and we’ve heard that the picture gallery isn’t showing up on everyone’s screens. No worries! Our designer is troubleshooting those problems and will hopefully have everything working soon.

If you have any questions about the site, events, documents, etc. please call us at 602-252-4200 or visit the comment area on our website.

HEADLINE NEWS

AIA SOUTHERN ARIZONA’S ARCHITECTURE WEEK
Arch. WeekGrowing Beyond GreenArchitecture Week  is a celebration of architecture in Tucson and is presented annually by the American Institute of Architects -  Southern Arizona Chapter (AIA-SAC) . AIA-SAC will host this year’s annual self-guided home tour, a guest speaker, library lectures, and a variety of other events emphasizing the influence of architecture in our community.AIA/SAC will celebrate Architecture Week 2007 with the theme “Growing Beyond Green,” in harmony with the growing awareness of the role of architects in creating a sustainable and livable environment. This year, the Home Tour will focus primarily on local residential projects that utilize “green” elements/aspects in architecture. Our goal is to promote a greater appreciation for architecture within the general public while also heightening the awareness of environmental aspects and/or systems that can be integrated into homes to help mitigate impacts on this earth. All events are designed to educate, entertain and raise public awareness and appreciation for architecture.

FROM AIA’S ARCHIBLOG…
Jim Sealy, FAIAHuman Factors — What is that?!by Jim Sealy, FAIAMerriam-Webster Online defines human factors as “ergonomics,” and ergonomics as “an applied science concerned with designing and arranging things people use so that people and things interact most efficiently and safely-called also biotechnology, human engineering, human factors.”

If you are willing to accept that definition, the contents of this blog will be simple to understand. It is my opinion that the most plausible definition of human factors is simply “the profession of architecture.” It strikes me as funny that the art and profession of architecture is so misunderstood that an architect (like me!) has to write articles to defend what we have been educated and trained to do: to design complete buildings and their related facilities and accompaniments, such as fixtures and furnishings. In essence, the above definition of ergonomics is precisely what we do as architects: design and arrange things people use so that people and things interact most efficiently and safely.
