| RECORD BREAKING: THE BURJ DUBAI |
|
Soon to be the Tallest Building In 2008 The Burj Dubai will be completed and will hold the record for the tallest building. Still under construction, the building stands at 1,535 feet high with 130 stories complete. The building already ranks second to Taiwan’s Taipei 101 tower. The final height is a guarded secret, but will be revealed when the structure is completed in 2008. This building will shelter four pools, a cigar club, a library, an exclusive residents’ lounge, 15,000 square feet of fitness facilities, an observatory and the first of its kind Armani Hotel and Residences. The expected population of the tower is 35,000 residents.

| DESIGNER EDUCATION SERIES: SANDSTONE |
|
Presented by Building Stone Institute Sandstone: A sedimentary rock composed of primarily quartz and/or feldspar. Sandstone is easy to work with, yet resistant to weathering. As a result, sandstone is a frequent choice of building material for various projects and landscape applications.
Thus, it also makes a good topic of conversation, at least the Building Stone Institute thinks so. They have developed this seminar on sandstone for the design professional. It covers artistry and aesthetics as well as technology and construction issues as they relate to the use of sandstone.
This event will be held at Taliesin West on July 18th, 2007 from 7:00AM to 4:30PM. The cost is $150.00 per person for AIA members ($250.00 for non-members). To register visit here. |

| FREEDOM!!! |

ASU-AIAS Chapter Is In Need of Architects Large numbers of people are literally prisoners in their own homes. They are unable to get into their showers, ascend steps or even open doors. Due to the design of their homes, many aren’t even able to flee in an emergency. Thus, Freedom by Design (FBD), an AIAS community service program, was created. It utilizes the talents of architecture students to radically impact the lives of people in their community through design and construction solutions.
In order for ASU students to pursue this community service opportunity, the ASU-AIAS chapter needs the assistance of local architects for its own FBD chapter. Specifically, ASU-AIAS is looking for build-design architects or architects with a background in construction who will be able to advise students on design, production and demolition through installation.
Contact Diana Smith (diana@aia-arizona.org) if you are interested in fulfilling this need. |
| We know that there is a lot going on - so be sure to check out the Calendar of Events at http://www.aia-arizona.org/Events/index.htm.
