 ASU-AIAS Chapter Is In Need of Architects Large numbers of people are literally prisoners in their own homes. They are unable to get into their showers, ascend steps or even open doors. Due to the design of their homes, many aren’t even able to flee in an emergency. Thus, Freedom by Design (FBD), an AIAS community service program, was created. It utilizes the talents of architecture students to radically impact the lives of people in their community through design and construction solutions.
In order for ASU students to pursue this community service opportunity, the ASU-AIAS chapter needs the assistance of local architects for its own FBD chapter. Specifically, ASU-AIAS is looking for build-design architects or architects with a background in construction who will be able to advise students on design, production and demolition through installation.

16th Annual Excellence in Masonry Architectural Awards  The Arizona Masonry Guild, Inc. is calling for your entries no later than July 12, 2007. They will be recognizing outstanding masonry projects featuring brick, block and stone. Awards will be given to the architectural firm, structural engineering firm, general contractor, major masonry supplier and masonry contractor for each winning project.

 Valley Forward Association and SRP Present the 27th Annual Environmental Excellence Awards Valley Forward Association is the only civic group in our region that focuses exclusively on the balance between economic development and environmental quality. Their awards program has grown significantly over the years and now encompasses 22 categories, including: buildings and structures, site development and landscape, open space and connectivity, art in public places, environmental technologies, environmental education/communication, environmental stewardship and livable communities.

 Tucson is Growing GreenFirst of all, thank you to everyone that participated in the SDAT!After three days of bus tours, walking tours, public forums and close-door debates, Tucson is headed in a green direction as they gradually resolve their growth issues.In 60 to 90 days, those involved will produce a written report on their findings and suggestions. In mid-October, the local architects’ group will hold a citywide community forum to discuss the report. In a year, a team member will make a follow-up visit to see how the recommendations are faring.Sounds like everything is mapped out very well. Congratulations Tucson! |

 New Book from Doris Cole, FAIA She’s the author of the first book on women in architecture and the president of Cole and Goyette, Architects and Planners Inc., and she has released another great read entitled, Candid Reflections: Letters from Women in Architecture 1972 & 2004.
In 1972 Doris Cole sent an inquiry letter to women architects throughout the country. The respnding letters chronicle careers that spanned most of the 20th century; careers that survived two World Wars, the Great Depression and into the 1970s. A second inquiry letter sent in 2004 elicited responses from contemporary women architects describing the developments of the subsequent 30 years.
Along with these eloquent letters 47 illustrations paint the picture of women’s accomplishments.

| ARE 4.0…BE PREPARED |

 Some Reminders about the Transition Timeline The launch of Architect Registration Examination (ARE) 4.0 will happen in July 2008. There is some very important information for those of you preparing to take the exam:
- ARE candidates who have passed at least one division of ARE 3.1 (the current version) prior to May 2008 will have until June 30, 2009 to pass all remaining divisions of ARE 3.1.
- ARE candidates who pass all divisions of ARE 3.1 before June 30, 2009 will not have to take any division of ARE 4.0.
- ARE candidates who do not pass all nine divisions of ARE 3.1 prior to June 30, 2009 will be transitioned to ARE 4.0.
- ARE 3.1 will not be available after June 30, 2009.

 Virtual Design and Construction Committee The Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) Committee would like to invite anyone who is interested in the virtual design process, i.e. building information modeling (BIM), integrated practice, 4D planning, 5D planning, etc., to join them on the VDC Committee.
The committee’s purpose is to learn about the application of the above technologies and how they impact project delivery mechanisms now and in the future.

 CEFPI Logo Contest The CEFPI is in need of a great image to go along with their slogan, “Where great schools begin,” and wants the logo to evoke their belief that every student deserves to attend a school planned, designed and built for them.
The winner will be formally acknowledged at the International Conference this October in Toronto. The winner will also receive complimentary registration and hotel accommodations, $500 toward air fare to the international conference and a plaque.

Urban Hub + Nature = A Great Downtown Phoenix?
HGTV’s “Extreme Building” Needs Unique Homes KPI, a New York City production company, is producing a show for HGTV called “Extreme Building.” It is a 13 part series of 30 minute episodes featuring two unique homes per episode that have endured construction or engineering challenges. The series is halfway done, but KPI is still in need of more homes. The houses must be completed and be unique in either site, design, shape or materials used. Contact Joanne Azern (
The Selection Process Has Begun…Let the Most Qualified Win! Currently, the national selection committee for The Architect of the Capitol is narrowing down the best candidates for the job. However, the recommendations that AIA National made were not followed. Instead, the committee is looking for a “manager” (a.k.a. a non-licensed architect). The dilemma is that in the next 10 years the Architect of the Capitol, quite possibly a non-licensed architect, will be managing a 15 million square foot campus, overseeing major renovations to historic structures and preventing any disruptions to Congressional activities.
