U of A - Beaux Arts Ball

March 24, 2007
Location: Reid Park Zoo
Date: March 24, 2007
Time: 7:00 pm to 11:30 pm
The Beaux Arts Ball has been a tradition for centuries among design colleges worldwide. With origins tracing back to École des Beaux-Arts School in Paris in the 1880s, the ball was an opportunity for students to socialize at the end of the term and invent creative, and often risqué, costumes for the occasion.

Themed as the “Urban Jungle,” food will be catered by Vila Thai and live Tucson band, SKITN, will feature CALAs very own Fernando Hinojosa BArch ’08* on the keyboard. Keeping with tradition, there will be contests and prizes for the best dressed in accordance with the theme.

Dean Chuck Albanese believes the Beaux Arts Ball will be an excellent opportunity for alumni and friends to interact with the College.

Outsourcing Architectural Services (OAS)

Harvard University - April 3rd & 4th
We would like to share and discuss with you the findings of the recently completed study on Outsourcing Architectural Services (OAS). The event will take place at Harvard University on April 3rd-4th, 2007. It is intended that the conference will bring together practitioners and researchers interested in innovative approaches to design and construction in the construction industry. Today’s global economy opens up a broad scope of opportunities for new business channels and for broader access to resources. Architectural practice, following trends in many other fields, is also evolving at a fast rate. Consequently, a new understanding of architecture and its practice is increasingly focused on gaining strategic improvement in business performance. The field represents a unique situation: while architectural practice is quickly becoming a global, open-sourced practice, architecture continues to serve as the physical formalization of a community’s identity and aspirations.

You will leave this event with: Understanding OAS (US domain)
Value Perception (for who. firm types by size)
Strategies for Capturing Value (Getting OAS right)
Future trends and directions (Paths to follow)

    Deadline extended to March 30
Each year the Council of Educational Facility Planners International [CEFPI] looks at the very best in well planned school buildings. The James D. MacConnell Award sets the “Platinum Standard” for schools that are exceptionally planned, designed and built to amplify the educational curriculum and ancillary uses that are so essential for a good school. In an effort to be more inclusive, we have extended the deadline to submit projects for the 2007 MacConnell Award until Friday, March 30, 2007.

Educational facility planners, Architects and school district administrators who want to showcase their exemplary projects should consider entering this year’s competition.

Most significantly, this year, CEFPI is hosting the Union of International Architects (UIA) in Toronto and your projects will serve as exemplary case studies to show our colleagues from other nations how world-class schools are planned, designed and ultimately built.

    Scottsdale Downtown Plan Update

    Submittal Deadline: March 27, 2007
The City of Scottsdale Advance Planning, Policy, and Design Division of the Planning & Development Services Department invites qualified consultants to submit a written response to this Request for Proposals (RFP). This request shall result in contracting with an Urban Design Consultant for the exciting opportunity to work with city staff and the community in completing a comprehensive update to the city’s 20+ year old Downtown Plan that will establish a blueprint for the future of Downtown Scottsdale in the 21st Century. The original Downtown Plan and subsequent community efforts have been successful at guiding the growth, both financially and physically, of Downtown Scottsdale. Downtown’s most recent successes under the plan include the addition of more than 2,000 new residential units as well as public and private development investment totaling $2 billion. With the influx of new housing and investment, Downtown Scottsdale is on the cusp of becoming a true twenty-four hour downtown, thus realizing the Downtown Plan’s main goal that Downtown Scottsdale has become a “highly functional mixed-use center” that provides a “creative environment in which people live, work and pursue leisure activities” (Downtown Plan, 1984).

As we embark on a new era for Downtown Scottsdale with its latest thriving residential neighborhoods, active tourism, creative arts community and burgeoning business districts, it is time for Scottsdale to once again assess the opportunities and challenges that downtown will face in the years to come. Some of the challenges that this plan update will need to examine include the following: urban design, sustainability, urban open space master planning, circulation and mobility, place making and addressing the quality use of the public realm.

Respondents are invited to present themselves for consideration in the selection of an experienced, knowledgeable and innovative organization to undertake this Downtown Plan update. The goal is to complete the Downtown Plan update by the end of 2007. Proposals are due by 4:00 pm on March 27, 2007. Late proposals will not be considered.
